Altitude Sickness

During the Gokyo Valley Trekking, altitude sickness is a serious concern due to the high elevation gained over a relatively short period. The highest point of the trek is Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters, and the highest overnight stay is at Gokyo village at 4,790 meters.

People who go on high-elevation treks can get AMS if they don’t take the time to properly acclimatize to the higher air pressure at these elevations.

People who experience altitude sickness often feel headaches, nausea, and the need to vomit; become dizzy; are short of breath; are less hungry; find it hard to sleep; and feel exhausted. The first indications of these symptoms typically appear when you are above 2,500 meters, and they get worse if you rush your ascent.

To prevent altitude sickness, it’s crucial to follow a well-paced Gokyo trekking itinerary with built-in acclimatization days. Always drink water, skip the alcohol, eat a good meal, and climb step by step. If the symptoms get worse, the only safe thing to do is descend. Since health centers are far away on the Gokyo Trek Route , you need reliable health insurance. Because Lukla’s weather can be unpredictable, it’s also recommended to obtain insurance against delays. Having a reliable policy gives you peace of mind during your Gokyo Lakes Trek, Gokyo Ri Trekking, or any teahouse trek to Gokyo in Nepal.

Gokyo Lake Trek Permit

When trekking in the Gokyo Valley, you should know that you need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. You must have the Sagarmatha National Park Permit to enter the Everest region, covering the Gokyo Lakes and nearby Himalayan views.

The purpose of the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit is to help with local development and to protect the surroundings in the Khumbu area. This pass is now used instead of the older TIMS card for travel in the Everest region.

The best time to do the Gokyo ri Trek in Nepal

The best months for the Gokyo Ri Trek in Nepal are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Clear weather and great views make these seasons the best time to see Everest, Cho Oyu, and the Gokyo Lakes. Rhododendrons bloom during spring, and by autumn, the air is cool and perfect for hiking.

The winter months (December to February) are calmer, and you’ll see snow all over the trails, though the very cold and slippery paths are a challenge. However, trekking during monsoon season (June through August) means getting a lot of rain, wet trails, transit delays at the airport, and fewer views—which increases the risks for trekkers.

If you’re planning the Gokyo lake trek, choose to travel during the peak seasons. Trekking requires you to always carry proper gear, get prepared, and have travel insurance—no matter when you go trekking.
